Sintra is a city of palaces and historic monuments, and has even been described as Disneyland for grown-ups. It was known in ancient times as the Hills of the Moon and its sheer beauty even inspired the poems of Byron. Its ancient centre is World Heritage listed and is studded with numerous ‘must-see’ buildings, including the Torre de Relogio clock tower and the Jewish quarter.

Cabo da Roca Other If you go to Sintra, don’t miss the chance to visit the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Cabo da Roca. Located at latitude 38º 47´north and longitude 9º 30´west, Cabo da Roca is an important coordinate for those sailing along the coast, as it is the most westerly point of mainland Europe, a fact borne out by the certificates that visitors take away as a souvenir. Around 150 metres above the sea, here you can have a panoramic view over the Serra de Sintra and the coast, which makes it worth the visit. Historical records indicate that there was a fort on Cabo da Roca in the 17th century that played an important part in guarding the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour, forming a defensive line along the coast, especially during the Peninsular Wars. Today there are only traces, as well as the lighthouse which is still an important point for navigation. It lies within the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais and is one of the points of interest on the walking trails that can be followed here, along the coast.

In transforming a former monastery into a castle-like residence, King Ferdinand showed that he was heavily influenced by German romanticism, and that he probably found his inspiration in the Stolzenfels and Rheinstein castles on the banks of the Rhine, as well as Babelsberg Palace in Potsdam. These building works at the Palace of Pena ended in the mid-1860s, although further work was also undertaken at later dates for the decoration of the interiors. King Ferdinand also ordered the Park of Pena to be planted in the Palace’s surrounding areas in the style of the romantic gardens of that time, with winding paths, pavilions and stone benches placed at different points along its routes, as well as trees and other plants originating from the four corners of the earth. In this way, the king took advantage of the mild and damp climate of the Sintra hills to create an entirely new and exotic park with over five hundred different species of trees.

Head west from Sintra for the golden sands of the western European coastline nearby. Perhaps the best way to get there is to take the hundred-year-old tram that runs from the city to the golden beaches beyond. Colares town with its promenade and wide beach is popular, as are Adraga Beach and Praia das Maçãs.

The Quinta da Regaleira is a decorative 20th century residence that is situated in the town of Sintra. The grand house is split over five floors and has an ornate gothic façade, but the real attraction is to the rear with the enchanting gardens. The gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira were styled to represent ancient secret orders, with hidden tunnels and concealed symbolism.

Arts & Culture

The thousand-year-old history of the Palace of the Town of Sintra began during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Already mentioned in texts from the 11th century, the original Moorish Palace became the property of the Portuguese Crown after the conquest of the city of Lisbon by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, in 1147. It was first subjected to alteration work in 1281, in the reign of King Dinis, and new extensions were later added to the building over time, in the reigns of the kings Dinis, João I and Manuel I, although it has largely maintained its present-day outline since the mid-16th century. The vertical arrangement of its spaces, adapting to the nature of the terrain; the intimate organisation of the interior courtyards, outdoor spaces in which one can hear the sound of running water; the windows with their surmounted arches; and the walls covered in glazed tiles with rich geometrical patterns, are all features that underline the Moorish links of the craftsmen who built and embellished the Palace.

Located in the Sintra hills, the Park and Palace of Pena are the fruit of King Ferdinand II’s creative genius and the greatest expression of 19th-century romanticism in Portugal, denoting clear influences from the Manueline and Moorish styles of architecture. The palace was built in such a way as to be visible from any point in the park, which consists of a forest and luxuriant gardens with over five hundred different species of trees originating from the four corners of the earth.

70 years ago, Porto Santa Maria was founded in the simplicity and true meaning of sustainability, offering the best that the Guincho Coast would bring in one's home: sea bass, golden bream, lobster, crayfish, and the much missed and unique Cascais Norway lobster that made and make gourmet delights.Man lives not by fish alone, and the saloia (peasants from the Lisbon region) influence in this bay is welcome: the Mafra bread baked in wood stoves, the thriving vegetables, the rustic fruits bursting with rural flavours, and the Colares wine so unmatched in its growth and production. Great dinning experience with a breathtaking view.
