I'm happily married to my wonderful wife, Kelli, who is originally from Mayville, NY. We currently live in my hometown of Portsmouth, VA, but vacation in Mayville every chance we get. It gets us away from the hustle and bustle of living in a populated area. My wife jokingly calls it "Mayberry" partly because of the Village being a lot smaller than what we're used to, but mostly because the people are very friendly and the atmosphere is so laid back.
Currently we both have full time jobs. I'm a physical science technician and my wife owns her own business providing local businesses with scheduling services. We also own two rental houses in Portsmouth that we lease out yearly. We love the Mayville area so much, we are planning on moving there after we both retire.
We currently are only able to spend a few weeks of the year in Mayville and thought it a great idea to let other people experience one of the most beautiful, peaceful, serene areas in the country. There's plenty of local area activities, museums and shops you can visit during your stay or you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.
Kelli still has numerous family members living in Mayville and the surrounding area and we do a lot of "visiting" while we're there. Some of the things we have enjoyed doing in the area include the following:
* Picnicking at Mayville's Lakeside Park (FYI: They have picnic tables, grills, a small beach & dock for swimming, a playground area, lit tennis courts, a newly renovated bath house, and a boat launch. Also, Don't forget to get some ice cream at Boxcar Barney's across the street);
* Boating, Fishing, Tubing & Water skiing on Chautauqua Lake;
* Walking the beach along Lake Erie in Barcelona looking for unique pieces of driftwood and beach glass;
* Hiking in the Chautauqua Gorge and on the Chautauqua Rails to Trails;
* Picking Blueberries (season usually runs 2nd week in July through August) at The Blueberry Patch in Ashville, NY.
* Touring the numerous Wineries along Lake Erie, collectively know as Lake Erie Wine Country (FYI: The second largest grape-growing region east of the Rocky Mountains, growers in Chautauqua County produce approximately 65% of New York State’s total annual grape harvest, which is then used in products sold in more than 35 countries around the globe);
* Exploring Panama Rocks (FYI: Located just 15 minutes from Chautauqua Lake, and is one of TripAdvisor's top-rated attractions in the region);
* Bird watching from our own dining room picture window into the backyard. Kelli & her sister, Tammi, have identified 35 different birds from that window. ( FYI: We have a couple of Bird Identification books for your use).
* Exploring Chautauqua Institution (FYI: Taking a Guided Tour via Shuttle Bus is probably the best way to see the incredible grounds at Chautauqua Institution if you are short on time and on a budget. Tickets are only $10 and the tour is about 75 minutes long. Get your tickets and catch the shuttle at the Main Gate Welcome Center daily during the summer season at 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The 2:00 PM tour is handicapped accessible. An experienced tour guide will tell the fascinating story of Chautauqua Institution, from its founding in 1874 as a place to educate Methodist Sunday School teachers, to the inclusive and dynamic community and programming it offers today. Also, admission to the grounds in summer is free on Sundays between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and Parking in the Main and Green Lots is free from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. Children 12 and younger are always admitted free. Also, on weekly Family Entertainment Nights, a discounted single ticket price for performances in the Amphitheater includes access to the grounds from 4 p.m. to midnight. Outside the summer season, access to the grounds is free);
* Golfing at one of the numerous area courses;
* Touring Amish Country;
* Taking a day-trip to Niagara Falls(about 90 miles away);
* Taking a half-day trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino(about 50 miles away) and then driving down to Kinzua Dam to take in the spectacular views;
* Driving randomly around the countryside while taking in the beautiful scenery.
While we're at our other home in Portsmouth, VA, we love spending time with our family that live down there. We enjoy being outdoors doing gardening, hiking, golfing, beekeeping (we have 2 hives) and bird watching. We also enjoy watching a good movie at home with some popcorn. Our favorite foods are Thai, sushi, pizza and anything either of our Mom's cook for us!
We are good, honest, trustworthy people. We believe in the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". When we were younger, one of our favorite mottos was "Spend it All and Have a Ball", but now that we're older and a little wiser our new favorite motto is "Don't Work for Money, Let the Money Work for You", although we should have adopted that motto a long time ago!
We hope we've inspired you to come stay at our home and enjoy the attractions and the beautiful scenery this part of the country has to offer.
Thank you very much for your time and have a great day.
