This is a renovated 150 year old farmhouse located at the base of Mount Madarao and backing directly onto the Chikuma River. The great thing about Madarao Farm is that you get the whole property and facilities to yourself, with your friends and family! So it is perfect for families who are travelling to stay for a few days, or even for longer periods to use as a base to tour Nagano and the rest of Japan. Ask us about discounts for long stays. This is a renovated 150 year old farmhouse located at the base of Mount Madarao and backing directly onto the Chikuma River.

The Chikuma River, also known as the Shinano River, is the longest in Japan and flows from the mountain areas of Nagano and Yamanashi and ends at the Japan Sea in Niigata. It is around 360 km long.

The great thing about Madarao Farm is that you get the whole property and facilities to yourself, with your friends and family! So it is perfect for families who are travelling to stay for a few days, or even for longer periods to use as a base to tour Nagano and the rest of Japan. Ask us about discounts for long stays!

As an approximate estimate we base our long term stays on the following guidelines:

3 weeks 21000 yen
1 month 240000 yen

Madarao Farm has a wood fire stove to keep warm and relax by in colder weather. There are three rooms with tatami mats and one western style bedroom, with a queen size bed. Sleeping for four is provided in the tatami rooms on futons. There is also a couch and fold out sofa bed. There is a reverse cycle air conditioner in the main bedroom.

There is a bathroom with shower and bath, but also a beautiful public hot spring about 3 km away (Momijiso Onsen). Also the amazing Shibuonsen hot spring town is only 25 minutes away by car.

The house has a large renovated dining room and dining table that is the at the center of the house for meals and entertaining. The house can accommodate 6 people comfortably.

The property is located on a scenic part of the Chikuma river and surrounded by a country garden with a fire pit, vegetable garden and BBQ area. A BBQ and wood chip smoker is available to use. Two mountain bikes are also provided for guest use and are excellent for touring around the local area.

It is close to a number of world class ski resorts, including Shigakogen, which is the largest ski area in Asia! Nozawaonsen Ski Resort is also only around 30 minutes drive away. There are also golf courses, including Madarao Kogen Country Club, which is 5 minutes drive away.

Madarao Farm is also close to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park, where the Japanese macaque monkeys bathe in natural hot springs. Near to the monkey park is the traditional hot spring town of Shibuonsen. We are also only 15 minutes from the historic town of Obuse.

There is also the Joshin-etsu Kogen national park in Shigakogen and many other mountains close by for hiking, including Mount Madarao, which is an easy 15 minute drive away. High quality tennis courts are also close by for tennis. There are two convenience stores within 2 kilometers for buying supplies.

Overall it is a fantastic place to kick back, relax, and experience traditional country Japanese village life.

The neighborhood is a small, country village that has been engaged in agriculture continuously for over 500 hundred years. Today the main products are rice, apples, plums, grapes and other vegetables such as white radish, tomato, cabbage, cucumber, potato and corn. Seasonal produce is available on request.

There is a train station, post office, two small local restaurants, two convenience stores and a hot spring with restaurant facilities all within walking distance to the property.

Please contact if pick ups are required from the local train station or a taxi booking are required from Narita Airport.

We can also supply local produce for meals and bookings and advice for tourist activities or eating out in the area.

Basic supplies such as soy sauce, miso soup, rice, coffee and tea will be left in the fridge for guest use. We can also help guests to buy other groceries for people who come by public transport. There are also two convenience stores located close by for buying groceries and other supplies.

Translation assistance is provided for booking services with Japanese companies with no English language services. Emergency contact numbers are provided in both English and Japanese for supporting guests while staying at the property. Transport to the monkey park can be arranged for people who come by public transport.
