The best jazz club in the city has only been around since 1993 but it feels like an institution. As the name would suggest it's tiny, with room for just 50 or 60 people, but the jazz (with an emphasis on bop styles, mostly, although it's pretty eclectic) is world class. Brooklyn's newest park is also one of its best, with amazing views of lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. Lots of open spaces to lounge about and read or just soak up the sun, but there are plenty of activities as well, with roller skating, basketball courts, a big barbecue area with grills and tables and lots of great concessions in season (Ample Hills ice cream!) - you could easily make a day of it down here, as the park encompasses the waterfronts of Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights and Columbia Street. New York's other great outdoor space was preferred by its designer, Frederick Olmstead, over his more well-known achievement across the river, and it's a great spot to meander or have a picnic (there are grilling areas throughout the park, but they fill up quickly on the weekends), fly a kite or toss a ball around. You can rent goofy 4-person pedal-powered cars or bikes, and the at LeFrak Center has two beautiful ice skating rinks where you can rent skates in the winter (Pro tip: go during the weekday when it's almost empty). A total tourist trap that most locals avoid, but definitely worth a quick visit. Nighttime is the only time to go. Spend a few minutes looking around, take some pictures, and then go to the North end of the triangular pedestrian island located at Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets, and listen: you'll hear Max Neuhaus' sound sculpture, "Times Square" wafting up through the grates, which it's been doing since 1977. Most people walk right over it without knowing! Check it out! And then get the hell out of Times Square!

The best view of Manhattan, bar none. Combine this with a visit to Brooklyn Bridge Park (take the 'bouncy bridge' pedestrian walkway from the park up to the heights) or a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, or Governor's Island. Sunset is fantastic, and then you can stroll through Brooklyn Heights (one of NY's prettiest neighborhoods) down to the Long Island bar for a cocktail and a snack.
My son has always loved this restored WWII aircraft carrier (there are other vessels as part of the museum complex, too), and if you're looking for a few hours of kid-friendly exploration this is a good spot; you can combine this with a Circle Line cruise, and Times Square is nearby, too.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by NYC and need a quick vacation without actually leaving city limits, this is the place: green, tranquil, quiet, with one of the best views of lower Manhattan around. Bikes, kites, food stalls (in season) and historical buildings, as well as frequent art and music shows. Check out govisland.com for ferry information and upcoming special events.

One of the best ways to experience NYC is by boat, and Classic Harbor Line has a wide range of beautifully restored vessels and specialized cruises (including an architecture tour); tickets are pretty spendy, but the elegant boats, limited number of passengers and gracious, professional crews deliver a lovely experience and stunning views of the city. In good weather, a sunset sail, with cocktails, is near the top of my Top Ten things to do while visiting the city. Check their web site for seasonal events and schedules. Highly recommended.

Graffiti writer, provocateur and career wiseacre Steve Powers has been on the NYC street art scene for years, and his little Brooklyn corner shop (formerly 'disguised' as a sign painting joint called Icy Signs) is a joy to browse. An always-changing selection of prints, posters and other ESPO merch are available for friendly prices, and the work is always witty and playfully subversive in a way that captures the attitude of the city. A gem, and a great place to buy non-corny NYC gifts for your friends back home!

The perfect record store, with a savvy but friendly staff, new arrivals all the time, listening stations and a great mix of covetable rare finds and $2 bargain bins. I hate to blow up this spot because I love it so much, but it's a great vinyl spot with good prices and if you love records you have to go.
