OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:
If you're interested in astronomy, we have deliciously dark night skies in this area of NM. And, if, like Harry and me, you're interested in occasional visitors of the extra-terrestrial or ufo variety, you can view a sighting in Rodeo at the following link: http://www.nicap.org/nmexico/newmexicosightings.htm Scroll down to September 25, 1965.
Don't be surprised if you witness night time lights that you can't exactly identify as satelites, jets or conventional air traffic. You be the judge...and don't forget to call us so we can look too!
Several denominations hold services in Rodeo on Sunday mornings. Let us know if you're interested and we'll provide the information you'll need to attend.

NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW:
The "Casa" is walking distance to the Rodeo Grocery and Cafe, where you can enjoy a great breakfast or lunch and meet the locals. They're all friendly, out-going folks, who love to tell a tale or two and will happily include you in the cross-table conversations.
You can also walk to the Rodeo Tavern. Open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, the Tavern is a must-see. Completely renovated and regionally decorated by owners Rob and Debbie Bernard, don't miss the historic mural in the back room that was lustily painted, years ago, by a patron who couldn't pay his bar tab, and thankfully saved, during renovations, for posterity.
The Chiricahua Gallery, "mid-town" an historic adobe building which has served many purposes through the years, now hosts the art and artistry of area residents. You'll be surprised by the sophistication and creative imaginations of people who choose to live remotely.

Finally, a short drive north of Casa Adobe on Hwy 80 at Portal Rd. you'll enjoy visiting the Chiricahua Desert Museum and Shop--quite a place for such a little town. Beautiful jewelry, nature and wildlife books, original artwork and gifts of all kinds to enthrall you will waiting to visit reptile exhibits in and out of doors. Swap and Shop, just across the road is a local second hand store for one of kind finds...you just never know what you'll rustle up when you get there.

Rodeo is one of a kind too. We don't think there's another place like it in the world.

Harry and I bought Casa Adobe about 9 years ago, and began to painstakingly renovate the house and grounds...and we're still together…amazing! It was hard but also very satisfying work. I learned to lay saltillo tile and "run trim." Harry and our helper Lonnie did the really hard and skilled labor, but I did come up with a novel approach to grouting without bending over! Lonnie has since left this dimension, but we'll always appreciate his attention to detail and how he just seemed to understand the vision we had for the end result. We're very pleased with the end result too, which is a charming, cozy, private, peaceful adobe house, surrounded by an adobe wall. All of our guests have been extravagant in their praise of our little Casa Adobe. They say it feels like a home away from home…and the adobe wall that surrounds the property, provides a private, quiet retreat for our guests and many "occasional visitors". Harry and I are not birders in the traditional sense of keeping life lists and all that, but we enjoy all the birds and encourage their return with lots of seed and water features. Harry is a Microbiologist, retired from Orange County Water District, and now doing consulting on projects involving molecular modeling for water filtration and treatment. I have a B.S. in Employee Assistance Counseling but have worked in everything but. Most recently I've been involved with hypnotherapy, past life repression and Reiki. I've worked in real estate, elder care, office manager in a construction business, helper/gopher in home repair and remodeling and now innkeeper. Harry and I love road trips in our 1986 Vanagan Syncro. We sometimes like to pack the van, drive to I-10 and then decide which way to go from there. It's just fun sometimes to travel without an itinerary, where every intersection provides a choice and a path to a new adventure. We like to search out interesting, out of the way shops where we might find antiques and treasures to use in furnishing Casa Adobe, as well as the circa 1950 Rodeo Elementary School that we now call home. We've been renovating it for the past 11 years. Because it hadn't been used as a school since 1964, it needed a complete infrastructure do over…like every square inch needs something. We don't know if we can possibly live long enough to actually complete it, but it will be a great start for the next guy! We took time away from the school to renovate Casa Adobe which is adjacent to the school, as well as a two story playhouse behind the school which, without the benefit of a metal roof would have been history years before we got here. We could see the "potential" our favorite word, and because it was cute as a button we just had to fix it. We added an adjacent full, adorable "cowboy" bathroom, and a huge deck to the second story that wraps around a beautiful desert willow tree. We love the "treehouse" as we now call it. Harry loves having his office in the ground floor and I love the quiet meditation room on the second story. Many other renovations have gone into the school property. We're more whimsical in many respects than practical, but we're happy and in the end, isn't that what it's all about? I guess the verdict is still out, since the end isn't in sight yet. A few years ago we bought a gallery across from Casa Adobe hoping to open one day as a little business. We can't seem to definitely decide on what we want to do there. Maybe a little shop with antiques and collectibles, and Harry's photography, maybe another little gallery in town where area artists (we have a pascel of very talented artists in the Rodeo, NM/Portal, AZ community) could do art and sell what they create. Or a little cafe featuring great coffee, tea, homemade lemonade and pie and ice cream for travelers venturing along Hwy 80. The future is a great mystery really, don't you think? Our philosophy toward our guests at Casa Adobe is to stay in the background and allow them to "retreat". We're always available, right next door, should they need area information, "a cup of sugar" or farm fresh eggs from our backyard chickens, or just a little chat. It's just a short walk through the back gate to the schoolhouse. We take great pride in readying the house for our guests, making sure everything is sparkling clean, cozy and inviting, always keeping an eye toward things that would make us happy if we were staying there. Harry can't help himself, every whipstitch he has another wall building project cooked up. His usually analytical mind is also amazingly creative and clever in his reuse of old materials for a new purpose. He just has an eye for what looks good. His mid-brained approach to life fascinates me, and I'm frequently amazed at the imaginative things he comes up with. Harry loves science and he also loves renovating old buildings, photography, desert artifacts for reuse, jogging, landscaping, our animal family, our old vanagan, and me. I love innkeeping, old buildings, antiques--both kinds, household and human, pine needle basket making, working with clay, our greenhouse, our wonderful dogs, cat, chickens and horse, the strange and mysterious, our dark, dark, star-filled New Mexico skies and contemplating what else might be out there, and of course, Harry. I can say this about us with absolute honesty and without apology. We're a little different, but we're nice…smile.
