საცხოვრებელი სივრცე
The name of our ‘cara-cabin’ will become obvious when you hear the light pitter-patter of feathery feet on the roof. ‘Pheasant’s Rest’ was our project when we moved to North Devon in April 2017. It is fully insulated to make all year round stays comfortable, and we have used eco-friendly technology to provide central heating throughout using FAR infrared heat panels. The kitchen is now open plan giving it a more spacious feel and is fitted with a fridge plus freezer compartment, kettle, cafetière, toaster, a 2 ring induction hob plus combination microwave/convection oven to prepare your meals. We also provide tea, coffee, sugar, cooking oil, washing up liquid, dish cloth and tea towel to reduce the amount of ‘extras’ needed when self-catering. There is a separate dining area next to the kitchen to enjoy your food.

In the living area there is a TV/DVD player (however we have removed the DVD’s and board games to make deep cleaning of the property easier), a digital radio, flame effect fire to make the room look as cosy as it feels, a 2 seater leather sofa, as well as a double sofa bed. WiFi is available throughout the space so you can stay in touch as you would at home.

We have converted the 2 tiny pre-existing bedrooms into 1 comfortably sized, heated, double bedroom with shelves and hanging space. The bathroom sits just off the bedroom corridor comprises of a shower, WC and basin. We also provide hand soap, 2 loo rolls, a hand towel and 2 standard towels. You will need to bring your own shampoo and shower gel.

Outside is a small, private gravelled garden with bistro table and chairs. We have also installed an outside tap and provided tubs to wash off muddy paws or rinse your wet suits. There is also a hanging rail outside to dry your wet suits ready for the next day ;-)

We would usually provide a light breakfast of homemade bread and a couple of eggs from our hens (provided they are laying), however at the present time we feel that it is safer to put this on hold, I do hope you understand.

You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Feel free to tag us and share your visit #pheasantsrest @pheasantsrest

სტუმრებისთვის ხელმისაწვდომი
On arrival there is a key safe and you have your own private gated entrance to the side of our property, and we have used trellis and climbing flowers to add as much privacy to your stay as possible. There is uncovered space to store your bikes/surf boards at the end of the caravan if needed, as well as an outside tap to rinse wet suits and wash muddy/sandy paws. We would ask that you don’t wash dogs in the shower.

If like us, a walk to the local pub for some excellent food and a pint with the dogs is what you are after, you can put a tick in this box! This is a daytime walk of just over an hour in either direction and takes you along footpaths and country lanes (although it is only 5 minutes away in the car if your prefer). You will need to check with all local businesses for their opening hours and social distancing measures at the present time. However, a walk down to Bucks Mill car park and pick up the footpath (we will leave full details in the caravan) will lead you to The Hoops Inn.

Clovelly (one of the filming locations for The Guernsey Literacy and Potato Peel Pie Society) is a must see, iconic, beautiful and picturesque, just a 10 minute drive along the road. Other stunning places to visit are Instow, Appledore and Hartland, but to be honest, there are far too many to mention. Please do check with local and Government advice about which attractions are open and please follow all social distancing guidelines.

Buck's Cross, England, გაერთიანებული სამეფო

As we live along a shared lane/footpath you will rarely see anyone passing. The neighbours you will see and hear mostly are the feathery ones, of which we have many ranging from jays, greater spotted woodpeckers and song thrush, through to blue tits, robins, siskins and bull finches.

Bucks Mills – a little history
The ancient fishing village of Bucks Mills is a picturesque retreat trapped in a bygone age, and interestingly, it is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bochewis.
A charming hamlet immune to the trappings of the 21st century, oozing with a sense of history. It’s beauty lies in its uncommercialised status, with no pub or shop, just the raw atmosphere of the coastal scenery and woodland that surrounds it. It is an ideal location for artists, photographers and walkers to explore and take in the ambience. It's historic background dates back to the Spanish Armada when the survivors of a Spanish Galleon took refuge and settled here. It is said that local women married the survivors of the shipwreck, forming a tight community, living in natural isolation. Next to the village is Bucks Woods which includes the site of the Iron Age Hill fort at Peppercombe Castle.
As you wind your way down the steep valley that leads to this quiet, undisturbed village, you are enveloped by woodlands. These woodlands belong to the Woodland Trust who have been carrying out some felling and re-planting of native species. Within these woodlands there are a host of pathways and walks to explore. You can see these in the OS map we have provided or from the sign boards in the free village car park.
The stream which runs through the village powered at least one mill. It falls over the cliff edge in a waterfall onto the beach which has large pebbles and hard sandstone formations. In the Elizabethan era, a break in the rocks, known as the Gut, was created by Richard Cole (1568-1614), lord of the manor of Bucks, by blasting the rock with gunpowder to allow access to the small harbour (since disappeared) for fishing vessels. In the 18th century this was used for the import of culm, a mixture of anthracite and limestone which was burnt in the lime kilns to produce fertiliser.
As you enter the village with its border of charming cottages, you will meet the pathway at the top of the cliff leading down to the beach. If you are lucky, you may well be able to purchase an ice cream through a kitchen window here on the right. From the top of the path you can survey the panorama, with Clovelly to the left (east), the prominent red cliffs of Peppercombe to the right (west), and Lundy standing proudly 17 miles out to sea in the distance. If you visit the beach at low tide the Gut will be exposed, you can enjoy the sand between your toes and enjoy a short stroll along the beach.
Half way down the steep beach path you see the most intriguing building. Standing here is a quaint cabin now under the stewardship of the National Trust, which was once the Summer House of two artists, Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards. For many years during the summer, they lived and worked here. After Judith’s death in the 1970’s it was locked up, with all it’s memories and left like a shrine. There are certain times throughout the year whereby you can enter the cabin and see just how it was left, please check the National Trust website for details.
Continuing down to the beach you arrive at the quay, which was once frequented by local fishing boats. The beach is now sprinkled with disused lime kilns and rusty winches, long since abandoned, but reminding us of how industry used to be. With these relics of history remaining you can imagine how busy this quayside would once have been. Exploring the beach is a must, with its multitude of marine life, lobsters, crabs and plenty of fish to be caught. Clambering over the rocky beach you will come across plenty of rock pools, and the fascinating rocky spit called the Gore, which looks as if it is reaching out to Lundy.
To add to the overall beauty of this location there is the waterfall which projects off the cliff, and glistens in the sunlight adding further splendour to this already magnificent place. This fascinating village offers something for everyone, be it a walk, picnic, fishing or a swim. The woodland walks and the lush green trees and flowers, the glory of the beach and its interesting geology, the waterfalls which splash against the rocks and trickle into the sea. What more could you ask for and all in one location.

We just love the outdoors and pace of life here in North Devon! Fabulous surfing just 20 minutes away in either direction, coastal and countryside walks all around. We decided to leave the rat race in 2017 and have enjoyed an ‘adult gap gear’ generally enjoying life whilst renovating our caravan; up-cycling wherever possible and making it as low energy and efficient as possible. Great lovers of all sport, there is always plenty to on and beautiful scenery to watch it in. What could be better??
