Create pottery with an Atlanta artist
We require hand washing upon entry, and require masks if you are in a vulnerable risk group. We'll introduce ourselves and we will give you a tour of our professional studio and kiln area to have an insider's view of how pottery is made and tour our gallery. Your instructor is an Atlanta ceramic artist, our studio is an incubator for those launching careers as artists selling their work. We'll have a short demonstration then an artist will guide you to make pots of your own. You will make 2-3 pots over the course of the next hour+ then you will get to select your own glaze colors for us to finish and fire your work. Unlike other experiences - there are no extra fees for extra pots! Great for groups or couples. Since pottery takes several weeks to dry, then proceeds with two firings - pottery that you make during your event will be ready in about 6 weeks. Local pick-up is free. Bean's Bees & Honey: Beekeeping 101
It is said that bees enjoy a secret life, but there is a fascinating story behind that life that should be made available for all to witness! Join us for a "Bee incredible" journey, as we explore the work of Apiarists (Beekeepers). You will be guided on a 1.5 to 2 hour tour (depending on the size of the group) encompassing the miraculous work of bees. Bees undertake the extraordinary important job of helping to mature and grow many of the plants we enjoy and providing a food source - honey - that is globally consumed and universally loved. If you're feeling exceptionally brave, you can don a full protective gear and open a bee hive for a closer look into the habitat of bees, the Brood Box (nest). Observe the Queen bee laying eggs, while learning about the unique roles and responsibilities of drone and worker bees. You'll be able to taste the honeycomb (if available) and sample sweet honey from the source; which has been used for centuries for its naturopathic or medicinal purposes. This tasty, unique and exceptionally enlightening experience in beekeeping is a can't miss opportunity for nature enthusiasts and is appropriate and entertaining for all guests ages 8 and up. If you have a large group and need a special date and time, please send a special request. I am consistently listed as 1 of the top 3 Experiences in Metro Atlanta. You will not be disappointed. Other things to note All participants will need to sign a waiver of risk before the Bee Experience. Starting October 1, 2019 through Spring of 202, all reservations will be subject to weather conditions. If the temperature is below 55° F or raining, the Bee Experience will be cancelled and rescheduled.
Walk through African American History
The tour begins with meeting Mrs. Patricia Bryant- Hughes, a descendant (Granddaughter) of Theodore Arthur Bryant, Sr., aka T.A. Bryant, Sr. & the tour begins at the oldest standing structure in DeKalb County, the historic Lyon's House site. Here you tour the grounds, experience the living space of slaves, & listen to rich stories passed down through generations. You gain an understanding of what it was like for families to live on small Southern Farms before the Civil War. You will also enjoy the best scenic views of Panola Mtn that only a local would know. Next, drive along a paved two-lane road to the start of an old stagecoach road, now a trail. Continue the trail for .25 miles as you get an understanding of Flat Rock. Then you turn a corner and enter a wooded area dotted with gravestones. This is the Flat Rock Historic Cemetery, with at least 202 interred individuals and many simple unidentified gravestones. We usually do not visit the cemetery in summer because this area has ticks & overgrown with ivy. Please communicate beforehand that you want to visit the cemetery if it is summer, as you will have to dress appropriately- pants, long socks, and tennis shoes. Some interred were born enslaved & freed after the Civil War. We will also visit the site of the first AA Methodist church site in the Flat Rock Community. And we will end the tour at the Flat Rock Archive.
