How do you identify a good sauce? What is the umami taste? Just like wine or tea, sauce is to be appreciated! Just like wine or tea, sauce is to be appreciated! You’ll learn about the history of Nanyang Sauce and the process of making sauce traditionally. The benefit of naturally fermented sauce and the difference compare with sauce that is produced in 1 or 2 days. After that, you will get to taste the different types of sauces and learn how these sauces can be used for cooking.

Ken is a 3rd generation artisan soy sauce brewer in Singapore. Founded in 1959 by his grandfather, Mr Tan Tiong How in Singapore, Nanyang Sauce is the oldest and largest traditional soy sauce brewer in Singapore.

Wonderful experience! I joined this experience to taste a difference between Japanese umami and Singaporean, so Ken’s wife told me the details. She taught a origin of NanYang sauce and what soy sauce is, then guests can try to taste some kinds of products. You can also buy it if you like(It’s not sold at super market). It’s high recommend to those who are interested in non GMO, no MSG things. I’ll come back again. Thank you

The most authentic way to discover the place you are visiting is to meet locals. Here at Nanyang Sauce have been devoted to their product for generations and they care more about the quality than the profit. We were welcomed to learn about their family business and to taste the same soy sauce that their grandfather used to eat. Not only it is a real treat but also a piece of history of Singapore.

Had a wonderfully insightful hour taste testing soy sauce @nanyangsauce was able to arrange through using up my expiring Airbnb voucher! I wanted to get to know more about local artisanal products of Singapore. This was the perfect opportunity near my house. I was very grateful to the owners Wife giving a open insider sharing into the old ways of soy fermentation. Did you know that the founder the owners Grandfather used a soy yeast starter and brought over from China then started selling from his kampung house? The sauces were all IMHO above market standard in taste and aroma, I was glad to take home a bottle of the dark soya...thinking to put it to good use in my special dishes ;) Above all that I tried as a food geek, I was so keen on trying the famed umami loaded soy sauce salt, worth more than Gold!

This is a great experience in a lovely location in the east of Singapore (close to good food!). I never knew the intricacies of making soy sauce and never knew we had a heritage family business so devoted to craftsmanship. It’s especially impressive how much the family remains committed to quality and tradition!

Our host was incredibly enthusiastic about soy sauce making, and her passion really shone as she took us through her family history and the variety of incredibly tasting sauces. I only wish the Experience was more physically interactive and allowed us to wander around the store engaging with different touch points!

We learnt so much more about the soy sauce trade than we would have, just reading off written books and materials. Gillian's storytelling brought us into the family's world of ups and downs, challenges and fun of running a family-owned business. It's heartening to see a traditional craft like this, continue to evolve in the face of modernization. I'm hoping this part of Singapore's history will keep growing, and looking forward to visiting Nanyang Sauce's brewing house to experience even more! Thanks Gillian and Ken, for sharing your family's trade and your lives with the world.
