The Harlem Renaissance was a period of unprecedented creativity in the 1920s and 1930s, when a people—and a nation—redefined itself. Create your own 3x4" tintype portrait and learn about the medium’s roots in 19th century Philadelphia. We’ll also explore the daguerreotype and the evolution of wet plate photography. • I’ll share a brief history of photography and teach you about camera functions and composition. I’ll also demonstrate the chemical processes that create images. • You’ll then sit for a portrait while I explain the chemical reactions involved. Welcome to Wolfville! Available year-round, let's gather at 7:45am at Waterfront Park, situated on the highest tides in the world. From there we'll slowly walk around the downtown core. Within our hour and a half together, we'll have stopped at the Acadia Cinema, three parks, and the Old Burial Grounds. Wolfville is the perfect starting place for adventure in and the Annapolis Valley and Southern Nova Scotia, and I reckon you'll end up having a greater appreciation of Where It's At! We'll focus on Wolfville's: history, landscape, businesses & buildings, cultural & culinary resources, opportunities, Acadia University, and more. Chances are, we'll bump into a few friends along the way. Unless it's absolutely horrendous weather, we ought to be able to walk & talk no matter the conditions. If needed, we can find always find a cafe to spend our time. Feel free to bring a list of questions about the area and make sure to inquire in advance about the various minivan & wine tours that I also offer. Forging at Quiver Full Farm

We are open! Our farm and forge were spared from the damage of hurricane Helene! Your blacksmithing adventure will include three hours of hands on instruction as you create your very own masterpiece. Your experience will start with a brief orientation to The Forge at Quiver Full Farm. During this orientation time we will make sure each participant is dressed and prepared with all necessary equipment to have a SAFE forging experience. We will be working with equipment that reach temperatures greater than 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. This experience requires participants to be attentive and be able to physically exert themselves. We will have all participants sign a safety liability waiver before starting. If you are under 18 years of age you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate. Jeremy will introduce you to all of the equipment that you will be using while creating your forged piece. He will give detailed and guided instruction on how to use these tools. From there you will choose one of several projects to create. Jeremy will be there to guide you, assist you, and maintain a safe working environment while you create your masterpiece. Other things to note This experience is for adults and children over the age of 14. If you have sensitivities to smoke and heat this may not be the experience for you.

Exploring a Secret Fort

We're going to explore one of the true hidden wonders of Washington, D.C., a Civil War fort nestled deep in Rock Creek Park. In July, 1864, a Confederate Army attempted a surprise invasion of Washington, D.C., hoping to sow panic and drive Congress and President Lincoln from the Capitol. Confederate forces swept into the city, and fought a desperate battle among the northern defenses of Washington. President Lincoln rode over to the see the fighting, the only time in American history a president has been under enemy fire. Eventually Union forces repelled the attack, and Washington was saved. It’s considered one of the greatest what-ifs in American history: Had the Union lost the battle, most historians believe there would have been a negotiated settlement to the war, and a durable Confederate nation. We’re going to visit Fort DeRussy, one of the forts that drove back the Confederate attack, and learn the full story of how the Civil War came to Washington. Abandoned after the war and overgrown, Fort DeRussy was practically lost to history. Today, it’s virtually unknown: I grew up blocks away and didn't even know it was there. It's an astonishing, beautiful ruin in a peaceful forest grove. Other things to note Please check the weather in advance and dress accordingly. Wear clothing that you don't mind getting a bit dirty and be sure to wear comfy shoes.
